因這一天是豫備日，為避免身體當安息日留在十字架上（因為那安息日是個大日），猶太人便求彼拉多叫人打斷他們的腿，給取去。就有士兵來了，把頭一個人的腿、和跟他同釘十字架那另一個人的腿、打斷了。來到耶穌那裏，見他已經死了，就沒有打斷他的腿。不過士兵中有一個用槍扎他的肋旁，立刻就有血和水出來。那看見的人作了見證（他的見證是真實：他知道他是說實話），使你們也可以信。這些事發生、是要應驗經上的話說：『他的骨頭一根也不會被折斷。』此外另有一段經也說：『人們必瞻望自己所扎的人。』
