Peter followed him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the servants, warming himself by the fire.

While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s maidservants came.When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said,“ You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.”But he denied it:“ I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby,“ This man is one of them.”But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again,“ You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean.”Then he started to curse and swear,“ I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him,“ Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus— but secretly because of his fear of the Jews— asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and took his body away.

But the Jews incited the prominent God-fearing women and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from their district.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,“ How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”The disciples were astonished at his words. Again Jesus said to them,“ Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”They were even more astonished, saying to one another,“ Then who can be saved?”Looking at them, Jesus said,“ With man it is impossible, but not with God, because all things are possible with God.”

Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them,“ Rulers of the people and elders:If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man, by what means he was healed,let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead— by him this man is standing here before you healthy.This Jesus is the stone rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone.There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.
