事后，有一个名叫约瑟的亚利马太人请求彼拉多让他为耶稣收尸。他因为畏惧犹太人，只是暗中做耶稣的门徒。彼拉多批准了，他就把耶稣的遗体领去。曾经夜访耶稣的尼哥德慕也来了，他带来了没药和沉香调成的香料，重约三十四公斤。他们按照犹太人殡葬的习俗，用细麻布加上香料把耶稣的遗体裹好。在耶稣被钉十字架的地方有一个园子，里边有一座新坟墓，从来没有安葬过人。因为那天是犹太人的预备日，这座新坟墓也在附近，他们就把耶稣安放在那里。

有一位名叫约瑟的公会议员心地善良、为人正直，住在犹太地区的亚利马太城，一直在等候上帝国的降临。他并不苟同公会的决定。他去求见彼拉多，要求领取耶稣的遗体。他把耶稣的遗体从十字架上取下来，用细麻布裹好，然后安放在一个从岩壁上凿出的新墓穴里。当天是预备日，安息日快到了。和耶稣一起从加利利来的妇女跟在约瑟后面，看到了耶稣的坟墓，并且看到祂的遗体被安放好之后，便回家去预备香料和膏油。安息日到了，她们按律法的规定休息了一天。

傍晚，从亚利马太来了一位名叫约瑟的富人，他是耶稣的门徒。他去求见彼拉多，要求领取耶稣的遗体，彼拉多就下令把耶稣的遗体交给他。约瑟领了遗体，用干净的细麻布裹好，安放在他为自己在岩壁上凿出的新墓穴里，并滚来一块大石头封闭墓穴的入口，然后离去。那时，抹大拉的玛丽亚和另一个玛丽亚坐在坟墓的对面。第二天，就是预备日之后的那天，祭司长和法利赛人一起来见彼拉多，说：

因为那天是预备日，第二天的安息日是个大日子，为了避免在安息日有尸首留在十字架上，犹太人便求彼拉多叫人打断他们的腿，好把他们搬走。
