A Roman commander was standing there in front of Jesus. He saw how Jesus died. Then he said,“ This man was surely the Son of God!”

And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said,“ Truly this man was the Son of God!”

At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.

Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.

But the centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.
