A Roman commander was standing there in front of Jesus. He saw how Jesus died. Then he said,“ This man was surely the Son of God!”

百夫長立於前、見其如是氣絕、則曰、斯人誠上帝子也、

百夫長立於前、見其大呼氣絕、曰、此誠上帝子矣、

立於前之百夫長、見耶穌如是大呼而氣絕、乃曰、此人誠為天主之子、

適有巴總在側、見耶穌臨終時情形、乃曰：『斯人真天主子也！』

The Roman commander and those guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened. They were terrified. They exclaimed,“ He was surely the Son of God!”

The Roman commander saw what had happened. He praised God and said,“ Jesus was surely a man who did what was right.”The people had gathered to watch this sight. When they saw what happened, they felt very sad. Then they went away.

He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him. He’s the one who said,‘ I am the Son of God.’ ”

It was decided that we would sail for Italy. Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a Roman commander named Julius. He belonged to the Imperial Guard.We boarded a ship from Adramyttium. It was about to sail for ports along the coast of Asia Minor. We headed out to sea. Aristarchus was with us. He was a Macedonian from Thessalonica.The next day we landed at Sidon. There Julius was kind to Paul. He let Paul visit his friends so they could give him what he needed.

A man named Cornelius lived in Caesarea. He was a Roman commander in the Italian Regiment.

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a Roman commander came to him. He asked Jesus for help.“ Lord,” he said,“ my servant lies at home and can’t move. He is suffering terribly.”Jesus said,“ Shall I come and heal him?”The commander replied,“ Lord, I am not good enough to have you come into my house. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.I myself am a man under authority. And I have soldiers who obey my orders. I tell this one,‘ Go,’ and he goes. I tell that one,‘ Come,’ and he comes. I say to my slave,‘ Do this,’ and he does it.”When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. He said to those following him,“ What I’m about to tell you is true. In Israel I have not found anyone whose faith is so strong.

Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead. So he called for the Roman commander. He asked him if Jesus had already died.The commander said it was true. So Pilate gave the body to Joseph.

But the commander wanted to save Paul’s life. So he kept the soldiers from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and swim to land.
