大司祭及經生輩亦相與肆其嘲弄曰：『何彼之善於救人、而拙於救己也！

In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves.“ He saved others,” they said,“ but he can’t save himself!

If he comes down now from the cross, we will believe in him!He trusts in God– let God, if he wants to, deliver him now because he said,‘ I am God’s Son’!”

Yes, wild dogs surround me– a gang of evil men crowd around me; like a lion they pin my hands and feet.I can count all my bones; my enemies are gloating over me in triumph.

So the chief priests and the Pharisees called the council together and said,“ What are we doing? For this man is performing many miraculous signs.If we allow him to go on in this way, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our sanctuary and our nation.”Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said,“ You know nothing at all!You do not realize that it is more to your advantage to have one man die for the people than for the whole nation to perish.”( Now he did not say this on his own, but because he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish nation,and not for the Jewish nation only, but to gather together into one the children of God who are scattered.)

Why do the nations rebel? Why are the countries devising plots that will fail?The kings of the earth form a united front; the rulers collaborate against the LORD and his anointed king.They say,“ Let’s tear off the shackles they’ve put on us! Let’s free ourselves from their ropes!”The one enthroned in heaven laughs in disgust; the Lord taunts them.

For it is better to suffer for doing good, if God wills it, than for doing evil.Because Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, to bring you to God, by being put to death in the flesh but by being made alive in the spirit.

Jesus replied,“ The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain.
