Therefore Pilate came out to them and* said,“ What accusation are you bringing against this Man?”They answered and said to him,“ If this Man were not a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.”So Pilate said to them,“ Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him,“ We are not permitted to put anyone to death.”

But Jesus said nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed.

And they began to bring charges against Him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”Now Pilate asked Him, saying,“ So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said,“ It is as you say.”But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds,“ I find no grounds for charges in the case of this man.”But they kept on insisting, saying,“ He is stirring up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee, as far as this place!”

So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted, saying,“ Crucify, crucify!” Pilate* said to them,“ Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for I find no grounds for charges in His case!”The Jews answered him,“ We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He made Himself out to be the Son of God!”

And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not offer any answer.

And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying,“ Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?”But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and* said to Him,“ Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”

As a result of this, Pilate made efforts to release Him; but the Jews shouted, saying,“ If you release this Man, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar!”
