“ Why? What wrong has he done?” asked Pilate. But they shouted even louder,“ Crucify him!”

And Pilate said to them,“ Why? what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more,“ Crucify him.”

“ Why?” Pilate demanded.“ What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder,“ Crucify him!”

Pilate said to them,“ Why? What has he done wrong?” But they shouted all the more,“ Crucify him!”

But Pilate said to them,“ Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more,“ Crucify Him!”

Then Pilate said to them,“ Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more,“ Crucify Him!”

And Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out exceedingly, Crucify him.

Then Pilate said to them,“ Why? What has He done wrong?” But they shouted,“ Crucify Him!” all the more.

Pilate asked them,“ Why? What has he done wrong?” But they shouted more insistently,“ Crucify him!”

We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted,“ Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered,“ You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”

He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

Such a high priest truly meets our need— one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.

The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said,“ Surely this was a righteous man.”

Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd,“ I find no basis for a charge against this man.”

The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted,“ Rid the earth of him! He’s not fit to live!”As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air,

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

But they kept shouting,“ Crucify him! Crucify him!”

and said to them,“ You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death.

But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.So Pilate decided to grant their demand.

When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.“ Look,” he said,“ I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him,

“ I have sinned,” he said,“ for I have betrayed innocent blood.”“ What is that to us?” they replied.“ That’s your responsibility.”

“ Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder,“ Crucify him!”When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd.“ I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said.“ It is your responsibility!”All the people answered,“ His blood is on us and on our children!”

From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting,“ If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement( which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon.“ Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.But they shouted,“ Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”“ Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.“ We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

“ What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said,“ I find no basis for a charge against him.

When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed,“ Surely he was the Son of God!”

but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.

While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message:“ Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”

But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours:“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
