Peter swore,“ A curse on me if I’m lying— I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind:“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.

Then you will remember your past sins and despise yourselves for all the detestable things you did.

The survivors who escape to the mountains will moan like doves, weeping for their sins.

But after he had taken the census, David’s conscience began to bother him. And he said to the Lord,“ I have sinned greatly by taking this census. Please forgive my guilt, Lord, for doing this foolish thing.”

That’s why I long for him and surely will have mercy on him.

But Peter said,“ Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.

You will remember your sins and cover your mouth in silent shame when I forgive you of all that you have done. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!”
