可是耶穌對他說：「我確實地告訴你：今天，就在今夜，雞叫兩遍以前，你會三次不認我。」

彼得卻否認說：「我既不明白，也不知道你在說什麼。」於是他就出去，到了門廊。這時候，雞叫了。

我思想自己的道路，就將我的腳轉向你的法度。我快快遵守你的誡命，不會猶豫。

彼得就開始賭咒並起誓說：「我不認識那個人！」立時，雞就叫了。彼得想起耶穌說過的話：「雞叫以前，你會三次不認我」，就到外面去，痛哭起來。

大衛數點軍兵之後，心中自責。大衛對耶和華說：「我做這事，犯了大罪！現在，耶和華啊，求你除去你僕人的罪孽，因我做了極其愚蠢的事！」

可是他醒悟過來的時候，就說：『我父親那麼多的雇工都食物充足，我卻要在這裡餓死嗎？我要起來，到我父親那裡去，對他說：『父親，我對天犯了罪，也在你面前犯了罪。我再也不配稱為你的兒子，請把我當做你的一個雇工吧。』

他就到外面去，痛哭起來。

耶穌對他說：「我確實地告訴你：今天晚上雞叫以前，你會三次不認我。」

彼得說：「你這個人哪，我不知道你在說什麼！」他正說著的時候，雞立時就叫了。

因為按神的意思憂傷，就生出悔改通向救恩，是不懊悔的；可是屬世界的憂傷，卻帶來死亡。
