彼得却否认说：“我既不明白，也不知道你在说什么。”于是他就出去，到了门廊。这时候，鸡叫了。

我思想自己的道路，就将我的脚转向你的法度。我快快遵守你的诫命，不会犹豫。

彼得就开始赌咒并起誓说：“我不认识那个人！”立时，鸡就叫了。彼得想起耶稣说过的话：“鸡叫以前，你会三次不认我”，就到外面去，痛哭起来。

可是他醒悟过来的时候，就说：‘我父亲那么多的雇工都食物充足，我却要在这里饿死吗？我要起来，到我父亲那里去，对他说：‘父亲，我对天犯了罪，也在你面前犯了罪。我再也不配称为你的儿子，请把我当做你的一个雇工吧。’

他就到外面去，痛哭起来。

耶稣对他说：“我确实地告诉你：今天晚上鸡叫以前，你会三次不认我。”

彼得说：“你这个人哪，我不知道你在说什么！”他正说着的时候，鸡立时就叫了。

因为按神的意思忧伤，就生出悔改通向救恩，是不懊悔的；可是属世界的忧伤，却带来死亡。
