西门·彼得问耶稣：“主啊，你要到哪里去？”耶稣回答说：“我要去的地方，你现在不能跟我去，但将来必定跟我去。”彼得说：“主啊！为什么我现在不能跟你去呢？就是为你死，我也愿意！”耶稣说：“你真的愿意为我死吗？我实实在在地告诉你，鸡叫以前，你会三次不认我。”

正当他走到门口要离开时，另一个婢女看见他，就对旁边的人说：“这个人是跟拿撒勒人耶稣一伙的！”彼得再次否认，并发誓说：“我不认识那个人。”

彼得说：“即使所有人都背弃你，我也决不会背弃你！”耶稣说：“我实在告诉你，就在今天晚上鸡叫两次以前，你会三次不认我。”彼得郑重地说：“就算要我跟你一起死，我也不会不认你。”其他门徒也都这样说。

就在这时候，鸡又叫了。彼得突然想起耶稣曾对他说：“在鸡叫两次以前，你会三次不认我”，忍不住痛哭起来。
