Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police, warming himself by the fire.

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant approached him and she said,“ You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”But he denied it in front of everyone:“ I don’t know what you’re talking about!”When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there,“ This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!”And again he denied it with an oath,“ I don’t know the man!”After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter,“ You certainly are one of them, since even your accent gives you away.”Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath,“ I do not know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed,and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken,“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter sat among them.When a servant saw him sitting in the firelight, and looked closely at him, she said,“ This man was with Him too.”But he denied it:“ Woman, I don’t know Him!”After a little while, someone else saw him and said,“ You’re one of them too!”“ Man, I am not!” Peter said.About an hour later, another kept insisting,“ This man was certainly with Him, since he’s also a Galilean.”But Peter said,“ Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him,“ Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”And he went outside and wept bitterly.

That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.Then the slave girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter,“ You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?”“ I am not!” he said.Now the slaves and the temple police had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself.

Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him,“ You aren’t one of His disciples too, are you?” He denied it and said,“ I am not!”One of the high priest’s slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said,“ Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”Peter then denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed.
