But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and declared,“ He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Now you have heard the blasphemy!What is your verdict?” They answered,“ He is guilty and deserves death.”Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him,saying,“ Prophesy for us, you Christ! Who hit you?”

Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

He was treated harshly and afflicted, but he did not even open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughtering block, like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not even open his mouth.

But Peter was following at a distance.When they had made a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.Then a slave girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, stared at him and said,“ This man was with him too!”But Peter denied it:“ Woman, I don’t know him!”Then a little later someone else saw him and said,“ You are one of them too.” But Peter said,“ Man, I am not!”And after about an hour still another insisted,“ Certainly this man was with him, because he too is a Galilean.”But Peter said,“ Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” At that moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him,“ Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”And he went outside and wept bitterly.

While this was happening, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.Jesus replied,“ I have spoken publicly to the world. I always taught in the synagogues and in the temple courts, where all the Jewish people assemble together. I have said nothing in secret.Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said. They know what I said.”When Jesus had said this, one of the high priest’s officers who stood nearby struck him on the face and said,“ Is that the way you answer the high priest?”Jesus replied,“ If I have said something wrong, confirm what is wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why strike me?”Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to Caiaphas the high priest.
