Every day I was with you. I taught in the temple courtyard, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true.”

Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.”

“ I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied.“ I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.

At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.

But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

“ Seventy‘ sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.“ Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven‘ sevens,’ and sixty- two‘ sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.After the sixty- two‘ sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.

He said to them,“ This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

It is written:‘ And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.

While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked,“ Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.And as he taught them, he said,“ Is it not written:‘ My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it‘ a den of robbers.’”The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

He said to them,“ How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out,“ Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him,but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him.“ By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked.“ And who gave you this authority?”Jesus replied,“ I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.John’s baptism— where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ Of human origin’— we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” Then he said,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said,“ I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him.“ Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said.“ Who gave you this authority?”

They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him.

Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished.He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises.In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them.To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people.All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.“ He trusts in the Lord,” they say,“ let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God.Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me.I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me.My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet.All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me.They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.But you, Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me.Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs.Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen.I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you.You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise him— may your hearts live forever!All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him— those who cannot keep themselves alive.Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!

Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,“ Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you.Lord, the Lord Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me.For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face.I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother’s children;for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn;when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me.Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards.But I pray to you, Lord, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes.You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap.May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them.May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt.Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation.May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.But as for me, afflicted and in pain— may your salvation, God, protect me.I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.This will please the Lord more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves.The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live!The Lord hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them,for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it;the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.
