他回到門徒那裏，見他們睡着了，就對彼得說：「怎麼樣？你們不能同我警醒一小時嗎？

他們在榮光裏顯現，談論耶穌去世的事，就是他在耶路撒冷將要完成的事。彼得和他的同伴都打盹，但一清醒，就看見耶穌的榮光和與他一起站着的那兩個人。

你們要仔細想想這位忍受了罪人如此頂撞的耶穌，你們就不致心灰意懶了。

押沙龍對戶篩說：「你這樣做是忠誠對待你的朋友嗎？為甚麼不與你的朋友同去呢？」

彼得說：「雖然眾人跌倒，但我不會。」耶穌對他說：「我實在告訴你，今天夜裏，雞叫兩遍以前，你要三次不認我。」彼得卻極力地說：「我就是必須和你同死，也絕不會不認你。」所有的門徒都是這樣說。

他又來，見他們睡着了，因為他們的眼睛很困倦；他們也不知道怎麼回答他。他第三次來對他們說：「現在你們仍在睡覺安歇嗎？夠了，時候到了。看哪，人子被出賣在罪人手裏了。

禱告完了，他起來，到門徒那裏，見他們因為憂愁都睡着了，就對他們說：「你們為甚麼睡覺呢？起來禱告，免得陷入試探！」

新郎遲延的時候，她們都打盹，睡着了。

「你與步行的人同跑，尚且覺得累，怎能與馬賽跑呢？你在安全之地尚且會跌倒，在約旦河邊的叢林要怎麼辦呢？

所以，我們不要沉睡，像別人一樣，總要警醒謹慎。因為睡了的人是在夜間睡，醉了的人是在夜間醉。但既然我們屬於白晝，就應當謹慎，把信和愛當作護心鏡遮胸，把得救的盼望當作頭盔戴上。

船長到他那裏，對他說：「你怎麼還在沉睡呢？起來，求告你的神明，或者神明顧念我們，使我們不致滅亡。」
