來到門徒那裏，見他們睡着了，就對彼得說：「怎麼樣？你們不能同我警醒片時嗎？

他們在榮光裏顯現，談論耶穌去世的事，就是他在耶路撒冷將要成的事。彼得和他的同伴都打盹，既清醒了，就看見耶穌的榮光，並同他站着的那兩個人。

那忍受罪人這樣頂撞的，你們要思想，免得疲倦灰心。

押沙龍問戶篩說：「這是你恩待朋友嗎？為甚麼不與你的朋友同去呢？」

彼得說：「眾人雖然跌倒，我總不能。」耶穌對他說：「我實在告訴你，就在今天夜裏，雞叫兩遍以先，你要三次不認我。」彼得卻極力地說：「我就是必須和你同死，也總不能不認你。」眾門徒都是這樣說。

又來見他們睡着了，因為他們的眼睛甚是困倦；他們也不知道怎麼回答。第三次來，對他們說：「現在你們仍然睡覺安歇吧！夠了，時候到了。看哪，人子被賣在罪人手裏了。

禱告完了，就起來，到門徒那裏，見他們因為憂愁都睡着了，就對他們說：「你們為甚麼睡覺呢？起來禱告，免得入了迷惑！」

新郎遲延的時候，她們都打盹，睡着了。

耶和華說：你若與步行的人同跑，尚且覺累，怎能與馬賽跑呢？你在平安之地，雖然安穩，在約旦河邊的叢林要怎樣行呢？

所以，我們不要睡覺像別人一樣，總要警醒謹守。因為睡了的人是在夜間睡，醉了的人是在夜間醉。但我們既然屬乎白晝，就應當謹守，把信和愛當作護心鏡遮胸，把得救的盼望當作頭盔戴上。

船主到他那裏對他說：「你這沉睡的人哪，為何這樣呢？起來，求告你的神，或者神顧念我們，使我們不致滅亡。」
