耶稣回到三个门徒那里，见他们都睡着了，就对彼得说：“难道你们不能跟我一同警醒一时吗？

二人在荣光中显现，谈论有关耶稣离世的事情，就是祂在耶路撒冷将要成就的事。彼得和两个同伴都困得睡着了，他们醒来后，看见了耶稣的荣光以及站在祂身边的两个人。

你们要思想忍受罪人如此顶撞的主，免得疲倦灰心。

押沙龙问户筛说：“这就是你对朋友的忠诚吗？你为什么不跟你的朋友去呢？”

彼得说：“即使所有人都背弃你，我也决不会背弃你！”耶稣说：“我实在告诉你，就在今天晚上鸡叫两次以前，你会三次不认我。”彼得郑重地说：“就算要我跟你一起死，我也不会不认你。”其他门徒也都这样说。

祂回来时见他们又睡着了，因为他们困得眼皮发沉，也不知道对祂说什么。祂第三次祷告回来后，对他们说：“你们还在睡觉休息吗？够了，时候到了，看啊，人子要被出卖、交在罪人的手里了。

祂祷告完后，便起身回到门徒那里，看见他们因忧愁而疲惫地睡着了，就说：“你们为什么睡觉呢？要起来祷告，以免陷入诱惑！”

新郎迟迟未到，她们等得困倦，便打盹睡着了。

耶和华说：“如果你与步行的人竞走，尚且感到疲乏，又怎能与马赛跑呢？如果你在宽阔之地尚且跌倒，在约旦河边的丛林中又会怎样呢？

所以不要像其他人一样沉睡，要警醒戒备，因为睡觉的人是在夜里睡，醉酒的人是在夜里醉。我们既属于白昼，就应当保持清醒，要把信心和爱心当作护心镜遮胸，把得救的盼望当作头盔戴上。

船长来到约拿身边对他说：“你这个人，怎么这时候还在睡觉！快起来祈求你的神吧，也许你的神会怜悯我们，饶我们一命。”
