“ You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.

“ Watch out! You will be handed over to the local courts. You will be whipped in the synagogues. You will stand in front of governors and kings because of me. In that way you will be witnesses to them.

“ But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them.

“ When these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.

“ But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.

“ But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them.

But take ye heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in synagogues shall ye be beaten; and before governors and kings shall ye stand for my sake, for a testimony unto them.

“ But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to sanhedrins, and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of Me, as a witness to them.

But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

“ You must watch out for yourselves. You will be handed over to councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.

But watch yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils. You will be beaten in synagogues. You will stand before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them.

But be on guard against people, for they will hand you over to the courts and flog you in their synagogues;and you will even be brought before governors and kings on My account, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.

And Jesus began to say to them,“ See to it that no one misleads you.

They will ban you from the synagogue, yet an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering a service to God.

Festus, then, after arriving in the province, went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea three days later.And the chief priests and the leading men of the Jews brought charges against Paul, and they were pleading with Festus,requesting a concession against Paul, that he might have him brought to Jerusalem( at the same time, setting an ambush to kill him on the way).Festus then answered that Paul was being kept in custody in Caesarea, and that he himself was about to leave shortly.“ Therefore,” he* said,“ have the influential men among you go there with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, have them bring charges against him.”After Festus had spent no more than eight or ten days among them, he went down to Caesarea, and on the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered that Paul be brought.After Paul arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many, and serious, charges against him which they could not prove,while Paul said in his own defense,“ I have not done anything wrong either against the Law of the Jews, or against the temple, or against Caesar.”But Festus, wanting to do the Jews a favor, replied to Paul and said,“ Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me on these charges?”But Paul said,“ I am standing before Caesar’s tribunal, where I ought to be tried. I have done nothing wrong to the Jews, as you also very well know.If, therefore, I am in the wrong and have committed something deserving death, I am not trying to avoid execution; but if there is nothing to the accusations which these men are bringing against me, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar.”Then when Festus had conferred with his council, he answered,“ You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar you shall go.”Now when several days had passed, King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea, paying their respects to Festus.And while they were spending many days there, Festus presented Paul’s case to the king, saying,“ There is a man who was left as a prisoner by Felix;and when I was in Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought charges against him, asking for a sentence of condemnation against him.I replied to them that it is not the custom of the Romans to hand over any person before the accused meets his accusers face to face, and has an opportunity to make his defense against the charges.So after they had assembled here, I did not delay, but on the next day took my seat on the tribunal and ordered that the man be brought.When the accusers stood up, they did not begin bringing any charges against him of crimes that I suspected,but they simply had some points of disagreement with him about their own religion and about a dead man, Jesus, whom Paul asserted to be alive.And being at a loss how to investigate such matters, I asked whether he was willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial there on these matters.But when Paul appealed to be held in custody for the Emperor’s decision, I ordered that he be kept in custody until I send him to Caesar.”Then Agrippa said to Festus,“ I also would like to hear the man myself.”“ Tomorrow,” he* said,“ you shall hear him.”So, on the next day when Agrippa and Bernice came amid great pomp and entered the auditorium, accompanied by the commanders and the prominent men of the city, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought before them.And Festus* said,“ King Agrippa, and all you gentlemen present with us, you see this man about whom all the people of the Jews appealed to me, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.But I found that he had committed nothing deserving death; and since he himself appealed to the Emperor, I decided to send him.Yet, I have nothing definite about him to write to my lord. Therefore, I have brought him before you all and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that after the investigation has taken place, I may have something to write.

Remember the word that I said to you,‘ A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they followed My word, they will follow yours also.

Now after five days the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an attorney named Tertullus, and they brought charges against Paul to the governor.After Paul had been summoned, Tertullus began accusing him, saying to the governor,“ Since we have attained great peace through you, and since reforms are being carried out for this nation by your foresight,we acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.But, that I may not weary you further, I beg you to grant us a brief hearing, by your kindness.For we have found this man a public menace and one who stirs up dissensions among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.And he even tried to desecrate the temple, so indeed we arrested him.

and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said,“ These men, Jews as they are, are causing our city trouble,and they are proclaiming customs that are not lawful for us to accept or to practice, since we are Romans.”The crowd joined in an attack against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely;and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

For I think, God has exhibited us, the apostles, last of all as men condemned to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to mankind.We are fools on account of Christ, but you are prudent in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are without honor!Up to this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed and roughly treated and homeless;and we labor, working with our own hands; when we are verbally abused, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;when we are slandered, we reply as friends; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.

For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer on His behalf,

Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,and asked for letters from him to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them in shackles to Jerusalem.

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

But Ananias answered,“ Lord, I have heard from many people about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints in Jerusalem;and here he has authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.”

‘ I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is; and you hold firmly to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

for I will show him how much he must suffer in behalf of My name.”

But you will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death,and you will be hated by all people because of My name.And yet not a hair of your head will perish.

Are they servants of Christ?— I am speaking as if insane— I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death.Five times I received from the Jews thirty nine lashes.Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent adrift at sea.I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among false brothers;I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.

When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained;and they cried out with a loud voice, saying,“ How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who live on the earth?”And a white robe was given to each of them; and they were told that they were to rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers and sisters who were to be killed even as they had been, was completed also.

While they were intent on killing him, a report came up to the commander of the Roman cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion.He immediately took along some soldiers and centurions and ran down to the crowd; and when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.Then the commander came up and took hold of him, and ordered that he be bound with two chains; and he began asking who he was and what he had done.But among the crowd, some were shouting one thing and some another, and when he could not find out the facts because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be brought into the barracks.When Paul got to the stairs, it came about that he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob;for the multitude of people kept following them, shouting,“ Away with him!”As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he* said to the commander,“ May I say something to you?” And he said,“ Do you know Greek?Then you are not the Egyptian who some time ago stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand men of the Assassins out into the wilderness?”But Paul said,“ I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city; and I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.”When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, motioned to the people with his hand; and when there was a great silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew dialect, saying,

Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet as a testimony against them.”

And as for all who do not receive you, when you leave that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.And they laid hands on them and put them in prison until the next day, for it was already evening.But many of those who had heard the message believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of high priestly descent.When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire,“ By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,“ Rulers and elders of the people,if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well,let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead— by this name this man stands here before you in good health.He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief cornerstone.And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.”Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.But when they had ordered them to leave the Council, they began to confer with one another,saying,“ What are we to do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let’s warn them not to speak any longer to any person in this name.”And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.But Peter and John answered and said to them,“ Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, make your own judgment;for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”When they had threatened them further, they let them go( finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened;

And I said,‘ Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You.And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed, I also was standing nearby and approving, and watching over the cloaks of those who were killing him.’

“ Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.And at that time many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another.

But the high priest stood up, along with all his associates( that is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy.They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public prison.But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and leading them out, he said,“ Go, stand and speak to the people in the temple area the whole message of this Life.”Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple area about daybreak and began to teach. Now when the high priest and his associates came, they called the Council together, that is, all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison for them to be brought.But the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported,saying,“ We found the prison locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.”Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what would come of this.But someone came and reported to them,“ The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!”Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence( for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).When they had brought them, they had them stand before the Council. The high priest interrogated them,saying,“ We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this Man’s blood upon us.”But Peter and the apostles answered,“ We must obey God rather than men.The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you put to death by hanging Him on a cross.He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”But when they heard this, they became infuriated and nearly decided to execute them.But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time.And he said to them,“ Men of Israel, be careful as to what you are about to do with these men.For, some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined him. But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.After this man, Judas of Galilee appeared in the days of the census and drew away some people after him; he also perished, and all those who followed him were scattered.And so in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, for if the source of this plan or movement is men, it will be overthrown;but if the source is God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.”They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.

And he came to us and took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said,“ This is what the Holy Spirit says:‘ In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and hand him over to the Gentiles.’ ”

Now when they heard this, they were infuriated, and they began gnashing their teeth at him.But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;and he said,“ Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”But they shouted with loud voices, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one mind.When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and the witnesses laid aside their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”Then he fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice,“ Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he fell asleep.Now Saul approved of putting Stephen to death. And on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles.Some devout men buried Stephen, and mourned loudly for him.But Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house; and he would drag away men and women and put them in prison.

Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church, to do them harm.And he had James the brother of John executed with a sword.When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter as well.( Now these were the days of Unleavened Bread.)

Now looking intently at the Council, Paul said,“ Brothers, I have lived my life with an entirely good conscience before God up to this day.”But the high priest Ananias commanded those standing beside him to strike him on the mouth.

This is a plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you indeed are suffering.

and He* said to him,“ See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

“ Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,so that upon you will fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

Then they secretly induced men to say,“ We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and they came up to him and dragged him away, and brought him before the Council.They put forward false witnesses who said,“ This man does not stop speaking against this holy place and the Law;for we have heard him say that this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses handed down to us.”And all who were sitting in the Council stared at him, and they saw his face, which was like the face of an angel.

I, John, your brother and fellow participant in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.
