And in his teaching he said, Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and to have salutations in the marketplaces,

He also said in His teaching,“ Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes, and who want greetings in the marketplaces,

And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and[ love] salutations in the marketplaces,

In his teaching Jesus also said,“ Watch out for the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces,

In his teaching he said to them,“ Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:“ The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.“ Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called‘ Rabbi’ by others. “ Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces. (niv)

While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,“ Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.” (niv)

“ And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. (niv)

He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: (niv)

Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. (niv)

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable:“ When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you,‘ Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you,‘ Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (niv)
