And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and[ love] salutations in the marketplaces,

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,“ The experts in the law and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.Therefore pay attention to what they tell you and do it. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they teach.They tie up heavy loads, hard to carry, and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing even to lift a finger to move them.They do all their deeds to be seen by people, for they make their phylacteries wide and their tassels long.They love the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagoguesand elaborate greetings in the marketplaces, and to have people call them‘ Rabbi.’

Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seats in the synagogues and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces!

As all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,“ Beware of the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes, and they love elaborate greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.They devour widows’ property, and as a show make long prayers. They will receive a more severe punishment.”

“ Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward.

He taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching said to them:

Beware of people, because they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues.

Then when Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. He said to them,“ When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, because a person more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host.So the host who invited both of you will come and say to you,‘ Give this man your place.’ Then, ashamed, you will begin to move to the least important place.But when you are invited, go and take the least important place, so that when your host approaches he will say to you,‘ Friend, move up here to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who share the meal with you.For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
