那時耶穌對羣眾和門徒講論說：『經學士和法利賽人坐在摩西的位子上；所以凡他們所吩咐你們的一切事，你們都要行，要守；可不要照他們行為的樣子去行啊；因為他們能說，而不能行。他們把沉重的擔子捆好了，擱在人的肩膀上；自己呢、卻不肯用一根指頭去動它。他們所行的一切事，都是要給人看的，因為他們把小匣經文帶加寬了，衣裳繸子加長了。他們喜愛筵席上的首座、會堂裏的首位、市場上的請安、以及受人稱呼為老師。

你們法利賽人有禍啊！因為你們愛會堂裏的首位、和市場上的請安。

眾民正聽的時候，耶穌就對他們的門徒說：『你們要注意提防經學士；他們好穿袍子走來走去，喜愛市場上的請安、會堂裏的首位、和筵席上的首座。他們吞喫了寡婦的家產，還作長禱告來掩飾；這種人必受更重的處刑。』

『你們禱告的時候，不可像假冒為善的人、喜愛在會堂裏、在大街的彎角上、站着禱告，好對人顯明着。我實在告訴你們，他們已經收到了他們的賞報了。

耶穌就用比喻教訓了他們許多事。當教訓的時候，他對他們說：

你們要注意提防人，因為他們必把你們送交議會，必在他們的會堂裏鞭打你們；

耶穌注意看被請的人怎樣揀着首位，就對他們講一個比喻說：『你被人請去赴婚筵，不要坐在首位上。恐怕有比你尊貴的被他請來；那請你也請他的會來對你說：「請把位子讓給這一位吧」；那時你就會羞慚慚地去取末位了。不，你被請的時候、要去坐末位；這樣，那請你的人來的時候、好對你說：「朋友，請上頭坐吧」。那時你在一同坐席的眾人面前就有光榮了。因為凡自高的必被降卑；自己謙卑的必被升高。』
