那時，耶穌對眾人和自己的門徒們說：「經文士和法利賽人坐在摩西的位子上，所以，他們所吩咐你們的，你們都要去做，也要遵守；但是不要效法他們的行為，因為他們說而不做。他們把沉重難挑的擔子捆起來，放在人們肩上，但自己卻連一根指頭也不肯動它們一下。他們所做的一切事，都是為了給人看：他們把自己的經文盒加寬，把衣服的穗子加長；他們喜愛宴席中的上座和會堂裡的首位，喜愛街市上的致敬問候，又喜愛被人們稱為『老師』。

「你們法利賽人有禍了！因為你們喜愛會堂裡的首位，喜愛街市上的致敬問候。

全體民眾正在聽的時候，耶穌對他的門徒說：「你們要提防經文士。他們喜歡穿著長袍走來走去，喜愛街市上的致敬問候，又喜愛會堂裡的首位、宴席中的上座。他們侵吞寡婦的家產，又假意做很長的禱告。這些人將受到更重的懲罰。」

「你們禱告的時候，不要像偽善的人那樣。他們喜愛站在會堂裡和十字路口禱告，好讓人看見。我確實地告訴你們：他們已經得到了他們的報償。

耶穌用比喻教導他們很多事，在教導時對他們說：

你們要提防人們，因為他們將要把你們送交議會，並且在他們的會堂裡鞭打你們。

耶穌留意到被邀請的人怎樣在那裡挑選上座，就對他們講了一個比喻說：「你被人邀請赴婚宴的時候，不要坐在上座，恐怕有比你更尊貴的人也被邀請，那邀請你們的會來對你說：『請讓座給這一位！』那時候，你就要羞慚地去坐末位了。「你被邀請的時候，要去坐在末位上，好讓邀請你的人一旦來，就會對你說：『朋友，請來上座。』那時候，你就在所有一同坐席的人面前有光彩了。因為每一個自我高舉的都會被降卑；而自我降卑的都會被高舉。」
