那时，耶稣对众人和自己的门徒们说：“经文士和法利赛人坐在摩西的位子上，所以，他们所吩咐你们的，你们都要去做，也要遵守；但是不要效法他们的行为，因为他们说而不做。他们把沉重难挑的担子捆起来，放在人们肩上，但自己却连一根指头也不肯动它们一下。他们所做的一切事，都是为了给人看：他们把自己的经文盒加宽，把衣服的穗子加长；他们喜爱宴席中的上座和会堂里的首位，喜爱街市上的致敬问候，又喜爱被人们称为‘老师’。

“你们法利赛人有祸了！因为你们喜爱会堂里的首位，喜爱街市上的致敬问候。

全体民众正在听的时候，耶稣对他的门徒说：“你们要提防经文士。他们喜欢穿着长袍走来走去，喜爱街市上的致敬问候，又喜爱会堂里的首位、宴席中的上座。他们侵吞寡妇的家产，又假意做很长的祷告。这些人将受到更重的惩罚。”

“你们祷告的时候，不要像伪善的人那样。他们喜爱站在会堂里和十字路口祷告，好让人看见。我确实地告诉你们：他们已经得到了他们的报偿。

耶稣用比喻教导他们很多事，在教导时对他们说：

你们要提防人们，因为他们将要把你们送交议会，并且在他们的会堂里鞭打你们。

耶稣留意到被邀请的人怎样在那里挑选上座，就对他们讲了一个比喻说：“你被人邀请赴婚宴的时候，不要坐在上座，恐怕有比你更尊贵的人也被邀请，那邀请你们的会来对你说：‘请让座给这一位！’那时候，你就要羞惭地去坐末位了。“你被邀请的时候，要去坐在末位上，好让邀请你的人一旦来，就会对你说：‘朋友，请来上座。’那时候，你就在所有一同坐席的人面前有光彩了。因为每一个自我高举的都会被降卑；而自我降卑的都会被高举。”
