你們法利賽人有禍了！因為你們喜愛會堂裡的高位和人在巿中心的問安。

眾人聽著的時候，耶穌對門徒說：“你們要提防經學家，他們好穿長袍走來走去，喜歡人在巿中心向他們問安，並且喜歡會堂裡的高位、筵席上的首座。他們吞沒了寡婦的房產，又用冗長的禱告作掩飾。這等人必受更重的刑罰。”

“你們祈禱的時候，不可像偽君子；他們喜歡在會堂和路口站著祈禱，好讓人看見。我實在告訴你們，他們已經得了他們的賞賜。

他用比喻教訓他們許多事，在教訓中他說：

你們要小心，因為有人要把你們送交公議會，並要在會堂裡鞭打你們；

耶穌看見被邀請的客人選擇高位，就用比喻對他們說：“你被邀請參加婚筵的時候，不要自己坐在高位上，恐怕有比你更尊貴的客人也被請來；那請你又請他的人過來對你說：‘請你讓位給這個人。’那時你就慚愧地退居末位了。你被邀請的時候，要坐在末位上，等請你的人過來對你說：‘朋友，請上座。’那時你在同席的人面前才有光彩。因為凡高抬自己的，必要降卑；自己謙卑的，必要升高。”
