你们法利赛人有祸了！因为你们喜爱会堂里的高位和人在巿中心的问安。

众人听着的时候，耶稣对门徒说：“你们要提防经学家，他们好穿长袍走来走去，喜欢人在巿中心向他们问安，并且喜欢会堂里的高位、筵席上的首座。他们吞没了寡妇的房产，又用冗长的祷告作掩饰。这等人必受更重的刑罚。”

“你们祈祷的时候，不可像伪君子；他们喜欢在会堂和路口站着祈祷，好让人看见。我实在告诉你们，他们已经得了他们的赏赐。

他用比喻教训他们许多事，在教训中他说：

你们要小心，因为有人要把你们送交公议会，并要在会堂里鞭打你们；

耶稣看见被邀请的客人选择高位，就用比喻对他们说：“你被邀请参加婚筵的时候，不要自己坐在高位上，恐怕有比你更尊贵的客人也被请来；那请你又请他的人过来对你说：‘请你让位给这个人。’那时你就惭愧地退居末位了。你被邀请的时候，要坐在末位上，等请你的人过来对你说：‘朋友，请上座。’那时你在同席的人面前才有光彩。因为凡高抬自己的，必要降卑；自己谦卑的，必要升高。”
