「法利賽人啊，你們有禍了！你們喜歡在會堂裡坐首位，又喜歡在街市上聽到別人的問候。

大家正在細聽，耶穌對門徒說：「你們要提防律法教師。他們愛穿著長袍招搖過市，喜歡人們在大街上問候他們，又喜歡會堂裡的上座和宴席中的首位。他們侵吞寡婦的財產，還假意做冗長的禱告。這種人必受到更嚴厲的懲罰！」

「你們禱告時，不要像偽君子那樣。他們喜歡站在會堂裡和十字路口上公開禱告，故意讓人看見。我實在告訴你們，他們得到的賞賜不過是人的讚賞。

耶穌用比喻教導他們許多事，在教導中祂說：

「你們要小心謹慎，因為人們要把你們送上法庭，也要在會堂裡鞭打你們。

耶穌在宴席中看見賓客們都爭著坐首位，就用比喻對他們說：「參加婚宴的時候，不要坐在首位，因為或許有更尊貴的賓客來赴宴，主人會把他帶到你面前，說，『請你把首位讓給他吧！』你就要滿面羞愧地退到末位去了。你去赴宴時，應該先坐在末位，這樣主人會對你說，『朋友，請上坐！』那時，你在賓客面前就有光彩了。因為自高的人必遭貶抑，謙卑的人必得尊榮。」
