大家正在细听，耶稣对门徒说：“你们要提防律法教师。他们爱穿着长袍招摇过市，喜欢人们在大街上问候他们，又喜欢会堂里的上座和宴席中的首位。他们侵吞寡妇的财产，还假意做冗长的祷告。这种人必受到更严厉的惩罚！”

“你们祷告时，不要像伪君子那样。他们喜欢站在会堂里和十字路口上公开祷告，故意让人看见。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐不过是人的赞赏。

耶稣用比喻教导他们许多事，在教导中祂说：

“你们要小心谨慎，因为人们要把你们送上法庭，也要在会堂里鞭打你们。

耶稣在宴席中看见宾客们都争着坐首位，就用比喻对他们说：“参加婚宴的时候，不要坐在首位，因为或许有更尊贵的宾客来赴宴，主人会把他带到你面前，说，‘请你把首位让给他吧！’你就要满面羞愧地退到末位去了。你去赴宴时，应该先坐在末位，这样主人会对你说，‘朋友，请上坐！’那时，你在宾客面前就有光彩了。因为自高的人必遭贬抑，谦卑的人必得尊荣。”
