As he taught, Jesus said,“ Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces,

Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples,saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat:all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, these do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not.Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.But all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi.

Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces.

And in the hearing of all the people he said unto his disciples,Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts;who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation.

And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

And he taught them many things in parables, and said unto them in his teaching,

But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you;

And he spake a parable unto those that were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief seats; saying unto them,When thou art bidden of any man to a marriage feast, sit not down in the chief seat; lest haply a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him,and he that bade thee and him shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and then thou shalt begin with shame to take the lowest place.But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that hath bidden thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have glory in the presence of all that sit at meat with thee.For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
