我要拿什麼朝見耶和華，在天上的上帝面前叩拜呢？要獻上一歲的牛犢作燔祭嗎？耶和華會喜愛成千的公羊和萬條油河嗎？我要因過犯而獻上自己的長子，因心中的罪惡而獻上親生的骨肉嗎？世人啊，耶和華已經指示你們何為良善。祂向你們所要的是什麼呢？是要你們行公義，好憐憫，謙卑地與你們的上帝同行。

我喜愛憐憫之心，而非祭物；我喜愛人認識我，勝於燔祭。

撒母耳說：「耶和華喜歡燔祭和其他祭物，還是喜歡人們聽從祂的話？順服勝於獻祭，聽從耶和華勝過向祂獻上公羊的脂肪。

如果你們明白『我喜愛憐憫之心，而非祭物』這句經文的意義，就不會冤枉無辜了。

聖經上說，『我喜愛憐憫之心，而非祭物』，你們去揣摩這句話的意思吧。我來不是要召義人，乃是要召罪人。」

我責怪你，不是因為你的祭物，也不是因為你經常獻給我的燔祭。我不需要你棚裡的公牛和圈裡的山羊，因為林中的百獸是我的，群山上的牲畜是我的。山中的飛鳥和田野的動物都是我的。就是我餓了，也不用告訴你，因為世界和其中的一切都是我的。難道我吃公牛的肉，喝山羊的血嗎？你要向上帝獻上感恩祭，向至高者恪守諾言，在患難中呼求我，我必拯救你，你必尊崇我。」

即使我能說人類和天使的各種語言，如果沒有愛，我不過像咣咣作響的鑼和鈸。即使我能作先知講道，又明白各樣的奧祕，而且學問淵博，甚至有移開山嶺的信心，如果沒有愛，我仍然算不了什麼。即使我傾家蕩產賙濟窮人，甚至捨己捐軀任人焚燒，如果沒有愛，對我也毫無益處。

耶和華說：「你們獻上許多祭物，對我有什麼用呢？我厭煩公綿羊的燔祭和肥畜的脂肪，我不喜歡公牛、羊羔和公山羊的血。「你們來敬拜我的時候，誰要求你們帶著這些來踐踏我的院宇呢？不要再帶毫無意義的祭物了。我憎惡你們燒的香，厭惡你們的朔日、安息日和大會。你們又作惡又舉行莊嚴的聚會，令我無法容忍。我憎惡你們的朔日及其他節期，它們成了我的重擔，令我厭倦。你們舉手禱告，我必掩面不理。即使你們禱告再多，我也不會聽，因為你們雙手沾滿鮮血。你們要洗淨自己，停止作惡，不要讓我再看見你們的惡行。你們要學習行善，追求正義，幫助受欺壓的，替孤兒辯護，為寡婦伸冤。」

向我獻上感恩就是尊崇我，我必拯救走正路的人。」

難道這是我要的禁食嗎？難道刻苦己身、像蘆葦一樣垂著頭、躺在麻布和爐灰上就是禁食嗎？這就是你們所謂的禁食，所謂的蒙耶和華悅納的日子嗎？「『我要的禁食是，除去罪惡的鎖鏈，解開軛上的繩索，折斷一切的軛，使受欺壓的人得到自由，把你們的食物分給饑餓的人，接待無家可歸的窮人，送衣服給赤身露體的人，不躲避求助的親人。

秉公行義比獻祭更蒙耶和華喜悅。

「我憎惡、鄙棄你們的節期，厭惡你們的聖會。即使你們獻上燔祭和素祭，我也不悅納；即使你們用肥美的牲畜獻上平安祭，我也不屑一顧。撤去你們嘈雜的歌聲吧，我不想聽到你們的琴音。惟願公正如江河滔滔不盡，公義如溪流綿綿不絕。

以色列的上帝——萬軍之耶和華說：「你們把平安祭連同燔祭都拿去吃吧！因為我把你們祖先帶出埃及的時候，並沒有吩咐他們獻燔祭或其他祭物，只吩咐他們，『你們要聽從我的話，我就做你們的上帝，你們做我的子民；你們遵行我的吩咐，就必蒙福。』

基督首先說：「祭物、供物、燔祭和贖罪祭都不是你想要的，也不是你喜悅的。」這些都是依照律法獻上的。
