One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him,“ Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

法利塞人聞耶穌致撒杜責人語塞、亦會集其黨。一律師來試耶穌曰：『夫子、律法中何誡為大？』對曰：『「盡爾之心、盡爾之情、盡爾之知、以愛爾上主天主。」斯誡乃首而大者。其次即「愛人如己」是已。此二誡者、實為所有律法及先知書之綱領也。』

時有一經生起而試主曰：『夫子、吾何修始可獲永生乎？』曰『經何云？』曰『爾當盡爾之心、盡爾之情、盡爾之力、盡爾之知、以愛天主、並愛鄰如己。』主曰：『善哉對！但遵此行、爾則生矣！』

有經生應曰：『夫子、旨哉爾言。』

是故人若違犯一至微之誡命、且以此教人者、天國中必小之。惟篤踐誡命、而又能以此教人者、在天國中乃稱為大。

曰：『何誡？』曰：『毋殺人、毋姦淫、毋偷盜、毋妄證、

哀哉爾經生與法利塞人、虛偽之徒也！蓋爾斤斤於薄荷、蘹香、蒔蘿、什一之輸、而於律中綱要、如正義、仁慈、信德、則漠然置之。彼固當行、此亦焉可廢哉？

哀哉法利塞！蓋爾曹察察於薄荷芸香園蔬什一之貢、而獨漠然於公義及愛慕天主之道。彼固宜行此亦不可忽也。
