法利赛人听见耶稣使撒都该人无话可说，就聚集在一起。他们中间有一个律法家，试探耶稣说：“老师，律法中哪一条诫命是最重要的呢？”他回答：“你要全心、全性、全意爱主你的神。这是最重要的第一条诫命。第二条也和它相似，就是要爱人如己。全部律法和先知书，都以这两条诫命作为根据。”

有一个律法师起来试探耶稣，说：“老师，我应该作什么，才可以承受永生呢？”耶稣对他说：“律法上写的是什么？你怎么念的呢？”他回答：“你要全心、全性、全力、全意爱主你的神，并且要爱邻舍如同自己。”耶稣说：“你答得对，你这样行，就必得生命。”

经学家中有几个说：“老师，你说得好。”

因此，无论谁废除诫命中最小的一条，又这样教导人，他在天国中必称为最小的；但若有人遵行这些诫命，并且教导人遵行，他在天国中必称为大。

他问：“什么诫命？”耶稣回答：“就是‘不可杀人，不可奸淫，不可偷盗，不可作假证供；

“虚伪的经学家和法利赛人哪，你们有祸了！你们把薄荷、茴香、芹菜，献上十分之一，却忽略律法上更重要的，就如正义、怜悯和信实；这些更重要的是你们应当作的，但其他的也不可忽略。

然而你们法利赛人有祸了！因为你们把薄荷、茴香和各样菜蔬献上十分之一，却把公义和爱神的事疏忽了；这些是你们应当作的，但其他的也不可疏忽。
