“ Teacher,” they said,“ Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.

“ Teacher,” they said,“ Moses wrote for us about a man who died and didn’t have any children. But he did leave a wife behind. That man’s brother must get married to the widow. He must provide children to carry on his dead brother’s name.

“ Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.

“ Teacher, Moses gave us a law that if a man dies, leaving a wife without children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother’s name.

But if he stands firm and says,‘ I do not want to take her,’then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, spit in his face, and answer and say,‘ So shall it be done to the man who will not build up his brother’s house.’And his name shall be called in Israel,‘ The house of him who had his sandal removed.’

And Judah said to Onan,“ Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.”

But Naomi said,“ Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Are there still sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?Turn back, my daughters, go— for I am too old to have a husband.
