He is not the God of the dead but of the living!”When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching.

While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the commander of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,angry because they were teaching the people and announcing in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.

But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is futile and your faith is empty.Also, we are found to be false witnesses about God, because we have testified against God that he raised Christ from the dead, when in reality he did not raise him, if indeed the dead are not raised.For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised.And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is useless; you are still in your sins.Furthermore, those who have fallen asleep in Christ have also perished.

They have strayed from the truth by saying that the resurrection has already occurred, and they are undermining some people’s faith.

Then when Paul noticed that part of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, he shouted out in the council,“ Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am on trial concerning the hope of the resurrection of the dead!”When he said this, an argument began between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.( For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, or angel, or spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.)There was a great commotion, and some experts in the law from the party of the Pharisees stood up and protested strongly,“ We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”

Now some Sadducees( who contend that there is no resurrection) came to him.They asked him,“ Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies leaving a wife but no children, that man must marry the widow and father children for his brother.Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died without children.The secondand then the third married her, and in this same way all seven died, leaving no children.Finally the woman died too.In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For all seven had married her.”So Jesus said to them,“ The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.But those who are regarded as worthy to share in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.In fact, they can no longer die, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, since they are sons of the resurrection.But even Moses revealed that the dead are raised in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live before him.”Then some of the experts in the law answered,“ Teacher, you have spoken well!”For they did not dare any longer to ask him anything.
