He built a tower in the middle of it and even dug out a winepress there. He expected it to yield good grapes, but it yielded worthless grapes.So now, residents of Jerusalem and men of Judah, please judge between me and my vineyard.What more could I have done for my vineyard than I did? Why, when I expected a yield of good grapes, did it yield worthless grapes?

“ It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his servants, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert.

He taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them,

Solomon owned a vineyard in Baal-hamon. He leased the vineyard to tenants. Each was to bring for his fruit one thousand pieces of silver.I have my own vineyard. The one thousand are for you, Solomon, but two hundred for those who take care of its fruits.

He was speaking the word to them with many parables like these, as they were able to understand.He did not speak to them without a parable. Privately, however, he explained everything to his own disciples.

You dug up a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.You cleared a place for it; it took root and filled the land.The mountains were covered by its shade, and the mighty cedars with its branches.It sent out sprouts toward the Sea and shoots toward the River.Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its fruit?Boars from the forest tear at it and creatures of the field feed on it.Return, God of Armies. Look down from heaven and see; take care of this vine,the root your right hand planted, the son that you made strong for yourself.It was cut down and burned; they perish at the rebuke of your countenance.

They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple service, and the promises.The ancestors are theirs, and from them, by physical descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, praised forever. Amen.

So what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?Considerable in every way. First, they were entrusted with the very words of God.

He is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors. He received living oracles to give to us.

Now if some of the branches were broken off, and you, though a wild olive branch, were grafted in among them and have come to share in the rich root of the cultivated olive tree,do not boast that you are better than those branches. But if you do boast— you do not sustain the root, but the root sustains you.Then you will say,“ Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”True enough; they were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but beware,because if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.Therefore, consider God’s kindness and severity: severity toward those who have fallen but God’s kindness toward you— if you remain in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.And even they, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, because God has the power to graft them in again.For if you were cut off from your native wild olive tree and against nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these— the natural branches— be grafted into their own olive tree?

He found favor in God’s sight and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.It was Solomon, rather, who built him a house,

Jesus told the crowds all these things in parables, and he did not tell them anything without a parable,so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: I will open my mouth in parables; I will declare things kept secret from the foundation of the world.

Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away.At harvest time he sent a servant to the farmers to collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from them.But they took him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.Again he sent another servant to them, and they hit him on the head and treated him shamefully.Then he sent another, and they killed that one. He also sent many others; some they beat, and others they killed.He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But those tenant farmers said to one another,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill the farmers and give the vineyard to others.Haven’t you read this Scripture: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.This came about from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes?”They were looking for a way to arrest him but feared the crowd because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. So they left him and went away.

And he told this parable:“ A man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He came looking for fruit on it and found none.He told the vineyard worker,‘ Listen, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it even waste the soil?’“ But he replied to him,‘ Sir, leave it this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.Perhaps it will produce fruit next year, but if not, you can cut it down.’”

Then I gave them my statutes and explained my ordinances to them— the person who does them will live by them.I also gave them my Sabbaths to serve as a sign between me and them, so that they would know that I am the LORD who consecrates them.

“‘ Then I said to their children in the wilderness,“ Don’t follow the statutes of your fathers, defile yourselves with their idols, or keep their ordinances.I am the LORD your God. Follow my statutes, keep my ordinances, and practice them.Keep my Sabbaths holy, and they will be a sign between me and you, so you may know that I am the LORD your God.”

Not many days later, the younger son gathered together all he had and traveled to a distant country, where he squandered his estate in foolish living.

And on that day every place where there were a thousand vines, worth a thousand pieces of silver, will become thorns and briers.

He declares his word to Jacob, his statutes and judgments to Israel.He has not done this for every nation; they do not know his judgments. Hallelujah!

He chose instead the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever.

Now he began to tell the people this parable:“ A man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and went away for a long time.At harvest time he sent a servant to the farmers so that they might give him some fruit from the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.He sent yet another servant, but they beat that one too, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.And he sent yet a third, but they wounded this one too and threw him out.“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What should I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.’“ But when the tenant farmers saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said,‘ This is the heir. Let’s kill him, so that the inheritance will be ours.’So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.“ What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and kill those farmers and give the vineyard to others.” But when they heard this they said,“ That must never happen!”But he looked at them and said,“ Then what is the meaning of this Scripture: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but on whomever it falls, it will shatter him.”Then the scribes and the chief priests looked for a way to get their hands on him that very hour, because they knew he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.

Then the disciples came up and asked him,“ Why are you speaking to them in parables?”He answered,“ Because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given for you to know, but it has not been given to them.For whoever has, more will be given to him, and he will have more than enough; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.That is why I speak to them in parables, because looking they do not see, and hearing they do not listen or understand.Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You will listen and listen, but never understand; you will look and look, but never perceive.For this people’s heart has grown callous; their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn back— and I would heal them.

“ I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes, and he prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be my disciples.

You came down on Mount Sinai, and spoke to them from heaven. You gave them impartial ordinances, reliable instructions, and good statutes and commands.You revealed your holy Sabbath to them, and gave them commands, statutes, and instruction through your servant Moses.

I planted you, a choice vine from the very best seed. How then could you turn into a degenerate, foreign vine?

“ What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ My son, go work in the vineyard today.’“ He answered,‘ I don’t want to,’ but later he changed his mind and went.Then the man went to the other and said the same thing.‘ I will, sir,’ he answered, but he didn’t go.Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ Truly I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn’t even change your minds then and believe him.“ Listen to another parable: There was a landowner, who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. He leased it to tenant farmers and went away.When the time came to harvest fruit, he sent his servants to the farmers to collect his fruit.The farmers took his servants, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Again, he sent other servants, more than the first group, and they did the same to them.Finally, he sent his son to them.‘ They will respect my son,’ he said.“ But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said to each other,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?”“ He will completely destroy those terrible men,” they told him,“ and lease his vineyard to other farmers who will give him his fruit at the harvest.”Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is what the Lord has done and it is wonderful in our eyes?Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruit.Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will shatter him.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew he was speaking about them.Although they were looking for a way to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because the people regarded him as a prophet.Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables:“ The kingdom of heaven is like a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son.He sent his servants to summon those invited to the banquet, but they didn’t want to come.Again, he sent out other servants and said,‘ Tell those who are invited: See, I’ve prepared my dinner; my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’“ But they paid no attention and went away, one to his own farm, another to his business,while the rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.The king was enraged, and he sent out his troops, killed those murderers, and burned down their city.“ Then he told his servants,‘ The banquet is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.Go then to where the roads exit the city and invite everyone you find to the banquet.’So those servants went out on the roads and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good. The wedding banquet was filled with guests.When the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed for a wedding.So he said to him,‘ Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless.“ Then the king told the attendants,‘ Tie him up hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’“ For many are invited, but few are chosen.”

Then I said,“ Oh, Lord GOD, they are saying of me,‘ Isn’t he just composing parables?’”

He answered them,“ The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to those outside, everything comes in parablesso that they may indeed look, and yet not perceive; they may indeed listen, and yet not understand; otherwise, they might turn back and be forgiven.”Then he said to them,“ Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand all of the parables?

Therefore he said,“ A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king and then to return.

So he said,“ The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

“ Where do you want us to prepare it?” they asked him.
