It is as when a man, sojourning in another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, to each one his work, commanded also the porter to watch.

And he taught them many things in parables, and said unto them in his teaching,

Solomon had a vineyard at Baal- hamon; He let out the vineyard unto keepers; Every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: Thou, O Solomon, shalt have the thousand, And those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.

Thou broughtest a vine out of Egypt: Thou didst drive out the nations, and plantedst it.Thou preparedst room before it, And it took deep root, and filled the land.The mountains were covered with the shadow of it, And the boughs thereof were like cedars of God.It sent out its branches unto the sea, And its shoots unto the River.Why hast thou broken down its walls, So that all they that pass by the way do pluck it?The boar out of the wood doth ravage it, And the wild beasts of the field feed on it.Turn again, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: Look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine,And the stock which thy right hand planted, And the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.It is burned with fire, it is cut down: They perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.

who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;whose are the fathers, and of whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

What advantage then hath the Jew? or what is the profit of circumcision?Much every way: first of all, that they were intrusted with the oracles of God.

This is he that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel that spake to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who received living oracles to give unto us:

But if some of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive, wast grafted in among them, and didst become partaker with them of the root of the fatness of the olive tree;glory not over the branches: but if thou gloriest, it is not thou that bearest the root, but the root thee.Thou wilt say then, Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.Well; by their unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by thy faith. Be not highminded, but fear:for if God spared not the natural branches, neither will he spare thee.Behold then the goodness and severity of God: toward them that fell, severity; but toward thee, God’s goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.And they also, if they continue not in their unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.For if thou wast cut out of that which is by nature a wild olive tree, and wast grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree; how much more shall these, which are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.But Solomon built him a house.

All these things spake Jesus in parables unto the multitudes; and without a parable spake he nothing unto them:that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.

And he spake this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit thereon, and found none.And he said unto the vinedresser, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why doth it also cumber the ground?And he answering saith unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:and if it bear fruit thenceforth, well; but if not, thou shalt cut it down.

And I gave them my statutes, and showed them mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live in them.Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am Jehovah that sanctifieth them.

And I said unto their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their ordinances, nor defile yourselves with their idols.I am Jehovah your God: walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them;and hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am Jehovah your God.

And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country; and there he wasted his substance with riotous living.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, shall be for briers and thorns.

He showeth his word unto Jacob, His statutes and his ordinances unto Israel.He hath not dealt so with any nation; And as for his ordinances, they have not known them. Praise ye Jehovah.

But chose the tribe of Judah, The mount Zion which he loved.And he built his sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which he hath established for ever.

I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him.But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them?He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner?Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them.

And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?And he answered and said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath.Therefore speak I to them in parables; because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.And unto them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive:For this people’s heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh it away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he cleanseth it, that it may bear more fruit.Already ye are clean because of the word which I have spoken unto you.Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; so neither can ye, except ye abide in me.I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for apart from me ye can do nothing.If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatsoever ye will, and it shall be done unto you.Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; and so shall ye be my disciples.

Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments,and madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them commandments, and statutes, and a law, by Moses thy servant,

Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate branches of a foreign vine unto me?

But what think ye? A man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to- day in the vineyard.And he answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented himself, and went.And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.Which of the two did the will of his father? They say, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye saw it, did not even repent yourselves afterward, that ye might believe him.Hear another parable: There was a man that was a householder, who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country.And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, to receive his fruits.And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them in like manner.But afterward he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance.And they took him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him.When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do unto those husbandmen?They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will let out the vineyard unto other husbandmen, who shall render him the fruits in their seasons.Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner; This was from the Lord, And it is marvellous in our eyes?Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken away from you, and shall be given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.And he that falleth on this stone shall be broken to pieces: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.And when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.And when they sought to lay hold on him, they feared the multitudes, because they took him for a prophet.And Jesus answered and spake again in parables unto them, saying,The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son,and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the marriage feast: and they would not come.Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them that are bidden, Behold, I have made ready my dinner; my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come to the marriage feast.But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise;and the rest laid hold on his servants, and treated them shamefully, and killed them.But the king was wroth; and he sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they that were bidden were not worthy.Go ye therefore unto the partings of the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage feast.And those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was filled with guests.But when the king came in to behold the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding- garment:and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding- garment? And he was speechless.Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.For many are called, but few chosen.

Then said I, Ah Lord Jehovah! they say of me, Is he not a speaker of parables?

And he said unto them, Unto you is given the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all things are done in parables:that seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest haply they should turn again, and it should be forgiven them.And he saith unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how shall ye know all the parables?

He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country, to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.

And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to the rest in parables; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we make ready?
