娶新婦的是新郎；新郎的朋友、那站着聽他的、一聽見新郎的聲音，就歡喜快樂；所以我的這喜樂是已得完滿了。那一位必須增旺，我呢、必須衰減。『那從上頭來的是在萬有之上；那從地上出的是屬地的，他講屬地的事。那從天上來的將所見所聽過的這件事見證出來，而沒有人領受他的見證。那領受他的見證的、便是蓋上了印、承認上帝為真實。上帝所差遣的那一位講上帝的話語；因為上帝賜聖靈、總無限量。父愛子，已賜萬有在他手裏。信子的有永恆的生命；不信從子的必不得見生命，上帝的義怒卻停留在他身上。』

他們走了，耶穌就對羣眾講論約翰說：『你們出去到野地裏要看甚麼呢？被風搖動的蘆葦麼？你們出去，到底要看甚麼？穿着細軟的人麼？看哪，那披着細軟的人是在王宮裏呢。你們出去，到底是為了甚麼？要看神言人麼？是的，我告訴你們；而且還是比神言人大多的呢！這個人就是經上所記到的，說：「看哪，我差遣我的使者在你前面，他要在你前面準備你的道路。」我實在告訴你們，婦人所生的，沒有一個興起來比施洗者約翰更大的；然而在天國裏最小的比他還大！從施洗者約翰到現在，天國運用着權力，用力的人攫取了它。因為眾神言人和律法書傳了神言，到約翰為止。你們若肯接受，這人就是那將要來的以利亞。

約翰的洗禮是從哪裏來的？是由於天呢？還是由於人呢？』他們就彼此議論說：『我們若說「由於天」呢，他就會對我們說：「那你們為甚麼不信他？」若說「由於人」呢，我們又怕民眾，因為眾人都以約翰為神言人。』於是回答耶穌說：『我們不知道。』耶穌也就對他們說：『我、也不告訴你們我仗着甚麼權柄作這些事。』

這兩人中，誰實行了那父親的意旨呢？他們說：『那後者。』耶穌對他們說：「我實在告訴你們，收稅的人和妓女比你們先進上帝的國呢！因為約翰引着義路到你們這裏來，你們不信他；收稅人和妓女倒信他。你們看了之後，還是沒有後悔而去信他。

我看見了，就見證這一位是上帝所揀選的。』
