若輩竊議曰：『如云自天、必曰何不信之。

They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’

They talked to each other about it. They said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’

And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?

They began to argue among themselves:“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?

They discussed with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’

They reasoned with themselves, saying,“ If we should say,‘ From heaven;’ he will say,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’

翌日、如望見耶穌來就。乃曰：『此除免世罪、天主之羔羊也！

如望揚聲為之作證曰：『予向所言：「有一後我而來、居我之上、原在我先」者、即斯人矣！』

見耶穌經過、注視之而告其徒曰：『爾其識之、天主之羔羊也！』

夫人娶婦而為新壻、新壻之友立而待之、聞其音則洋洋而喜。今者吾樂之沛然充溢、亦復如是。彼當日益、我宜日損。蓋臨自上者、居萬眾之上；本乎地者、不超乎地、而所言亦不出地上之事。惟降自天者、則超軼乎萬有之上。彼所證者、皆屬親見親聞、而眾獨不納其證。苟有納其證者、是即印證天主之真實無妄。天主所遣者、傳天主之訓、以天主賦以聖神、無有限量故、聖父篤愛聖子、已將一切授諸其手矣。信仰聖子者、獲永生；不順聖子者、無以望生、天主譴怒、恆臨其身。』

二徒既返、耶穌向眾論如望曰：『曩者爾曹適彼曠野、出視何物？將風中之蘆葦乎？出視何物？將袞衣繡裳者乎？袞衣繡裳者、惟居王宮。然則爾之出也、果何為乎？欲睹先知乎？吾曰是矣、然奚啻先知而已哉！經云：「我遣使者先汝行、為汝除道開汝路；」即斯人也。我實語爾、婦女所生、未有大於施洗如望者；然天國中之小者、猶大於彼。自施洗如望之日、以迄於今、天國可以勉彊力行而致也；凡勇猛精進、發揚蹈厲者、必得襲而取之。蓋先知與律法之預言、至如望而集其成。倘爾能心領神會、彼即當臨之伊理藹也。

夫如望之洗、何自而來、自天乎、自人乎？』若輩私議曰：『吾儕若曰自天、彼將問我何以不信；若曰自人、民又可畏、蓋眾皆以如望為先知也。』因對曰：『不知。』耶穌乃謂之曰：『然則吾亦不願告爾憑何權以行此矣。』

二者孰孝？』對曰：『長子。』耶穌曰：『吾實語爾、稅吏娼妓、將先爾曹入天主國。蓋如望以義路開導於爾、爾不之信；而稅吏娼妓、則信之矣。爾見其事。猶未能悔悟而起信也。

予既見之、爰證其為天主之聖子。』
