And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?

They began to argue among themselves:“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’

第二天，约翰见耶稣迎面而来，就说：“看哪，神的羊羔，是除去世人的罪孽的！

约翰为他作见证，大声说：“这一位就是我所说的：‘那在我以后来的，位分比我高，因为他本来是在我以前的。’”

约翰看见耶稣走过的时候，就说：“看哪，神的羊羔！”

娶新娘的是新郎。新郎的好友站在那里听着，听见新郎的声音就非常喜乐。因此，我这喜乐满溢了！他必兴旺，我必衰微。“那从天上来的，是在万有之上；从地上来的，是属于地，所讲的也是属于地。那从天上来的，是超越万有之上。他把所见所闻的见证出来，可是没有人接受他的见证。那接受他的见证的，就确认神是真的。神所差来的那一位讲神的话，因为神把圣灵无限地赐给他。父爱子，已经把万有交在他手里。信子的，有永生；不信从子的，必不得见永生，神的震怒却常在他身上。”

他们走了之后，耶稣对群众讲起约翰来，说：“你们到旷野去，是要看什么？被风吹动的芦苇吗？你们出去到底要看什么？身穿华丽衣裳的人吗？那些穿着华丽衣裳的人，是在王宫里的。那么，你们出去要看什么？先知吗？我告诉你们，是的。他比先知重要得多了。经上所记：‘看哪，我差遣我的使者在你面前，他必在你前头预备你的道路。’这句话是指着他说的。我实在告诉你们，妇人所生的，没有一个比施洗的约翰更大；然而天国里最小的比他还大。从施洗的约翰的时候直到现在，天国不断遭受猛烈的攻击，强暴的人企图把它夺去。所有的先知和律法，直到约翰为止，都说了预言。如果你们肯接受，约翰就是那要来的以利亚。

约翰的洗礼是从哪里来的呢？是从天上来的，还是从人来的呢？”他们就彼此议论：“如果我们说‘是从天上来的’，他会问我们‘那你们为什么不信他呢？’如果我们说‘是从人来的’，我们又怕群众，因为他们都认为约翰是先知。”于是回答耶稣：“我们不知道。”耶稣也对他们说：“我也不告诉你们，我凭什么权柄作这些事。

这两个儿子，哪一个听父亲的话呢？”他们说：“大儿子。”耶稣对他们说：“我实在告诉你们：税吏和娼妓比你们先进神的国。约翰来到你们那里，指示你们行义路﹙或译：“约翰在义路中，来到你们这里”。﹚，你们不信他；税吏和娼妓却信了他。你们看见了之后，还是没有改变心意去信他。

我看见了，就作见证说：‘这就是神的儿子。’”
