就在那些日子裡，有一天耶穌在聖殿裡教導民眾、傳福音的時候，祭司長們、經文士們和長老們一起上前來，對他說：「請告訴我們：你憑什麼權柄做這些事？是誰給你這權柄的？」耶穌回答他們，說：「我也要問你們一個問題，你們告訴我：約翰的洗禮是來自天上，還是來自人間呢？」他們就彼此商量，說：「如果我們說『是來自天上』，他就會問『你們為什麼不相信他呢？』但如果說『是來自人間』，那麼民眾都會用石頭砸我們，因為他們深信約翰是先知。」於是他們回答：「不知道是從哪裡來的。」耶穌就對他們說：「我也不告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。」

「事實上，希律和本丟彼拉多，與外邦人和以色列子民果然在這城裡一同聚集，對付你所膏立的聖僕耶穌，做成了你手和你計劃所預定要成就的一切事。

到了第二天，猶太人的首領、長老和經文士們都聚集在耶路撒冷。大祭司亞納、該亞法、約翰、亞歷山大，以及大祭司家族的人都在那裡。他們叫彼得和約翰站在中間，質問他們，說：「你們憑著什麼能力，以誰的名做這事？」那時，彼得被聖靈充滿，對他們說：「民眾的首領和長老們，

過兩天就是逾越節和除酵節了。祭司長們和經文士們在圖謀怎樣用詭計拘捕耶穌，把他殺掉。

耶穌回答他：「我一向公開地對世人講話。我總是在會堂和聖殿，就是所有猶太人聚集的地方教導人。我沒有在隱祕中講過什麼。

為什麼萬國悖逆，萬民圖謀虛妄的事呢？地上的君王們站出來，首領們一同商定，敵對耶和華和他的受膏者，說：「讓我們掙斷他們的捆綁，把他們的繩索從我們身上甩掉！」坐在天上的那一位會譏笑，主會嘲笑他們。那時他在怒氣中向他們說話，在烈怒中使他們惶恐，說：

耶穌正在聖殿的所羅門柱廊上走著，

萬軍之耶和華說：「看哪，我要派遣我的使者在我前面預備道路！你們所尋求的主，必突然來到他的殿；看哪，你們所喜悅的那立約的使者，就要來到！」
