有一天，耶穌在殿裡教導人，宣講福音，眾祭司長、經學家和長老上前來，對他說：“告訴我們，你憑著甚麼權柄作這些事？給你這權柄的是誰？”他回答他們：“我也要問你們一句話，你們告訴我：約翰的洗禮是從天上來的，還是從人來的呢？”他們就彼此議論說：“如果我們說：‘是從天上來的’，他就會問：‘那你們為甚麼不相信他呢？’如果我們說：‘是從人來的’，眾人都會用石頭打我們，因為他們都認定約翰是先知。”於是他們回答耶穌：“我們不知道是從哪裡來的。”耶穌說：“我也不告訴你們，我憑著甚麼權柄作這些事。”

希律和本丟．彼拉多，外族人和以色列民，真的在這城裡聚集，反對你所膏立的聖僕耶穌，行了你手和你旨意所預定要成就的一切。

第二天，猶太人的官長、長老、經學家，都聚集在耶路撒冷，還有大祭司亞那和該亞法、約翰、亞歷山大，以及大祭司的家人，所有的人都在那裡。他們叫使徒都站在當中，查問說：“你們憑甚麼能力，奉誰的名作這事？”當時彼得被聖靈充滿，對他們說：“民眾的領袖和長老啊！

過兩天，就是逾越節和除酵節了，祭司長和經學家設法怎樣用詭計逮捕耶穌，把他殺害。他們說：“不可在節期下手，免得引起民眾暴動。”

耶穌對大祭司說：“我向來對世人講話都是公開的，我常常在會堂和聖殿裡，就是在所有猶太人聚集的地方教導人，暗地裡我並沒有講甚麼。

列國為甚麼騷動？萬民為甚麼空謀妄想？世上的君王起來，首領聚在一起，敵對耶和華和他所膏立的，說：“我們來掙斷他們給我們的束縛，擺脫他們的繩索！”那坐在天上的必發笑，主必譏笑他們。那時，他必在烈怒中對他們講話，在震怒中使他們驚慌，說：

耶穌在殿的所羅門廊上走過，

萬軍之耶和華說：“看哪！我派我的使者，在我前面預備道路；你們所尋求的主，必忽然進入他的殿；你們所愛慕立約的使者，就要來到。”
