有一天，耶稣在殿里教导人，宣讲福音，众祭司长、经学家和长老上前来，对他说：“告诉我们，你凭着什么权柄作这些事？给你这权柄的是谁？”他回答他们：“我也要问你们一句话，你们告诉我：约翰的洗礼是从天上来的，还是从人来的呢？”他们就彼此议论说：“如果我们说：‘是从天上来的’，他就会问：‘那你们为什么不相信他呢？’如果我们说：‘是从人来的’，众人都会用石头打我们，因为他们都认定约翰是先知。”于是他们回答耶稣：“我们不知道是从哪里来的。”耶稣说：“我也不告诉你们，我凭着什么权柄作这些事。”

列国为什么骚动？万民为什么空谋妄想？世上的君王起来，首领聚在一起，敌对耶和华和他所膏立的，说：“我们来挣断他们给我们的束缚，摆脱他们的绳索！”那坐在天上的必发笑，主必讥笑他们。那时，他必在烈怒中对他们讲话，在震怒中使他们惊慌，说：

耶稣在殿的所罗门廊上走过，

万军之耶和华说：“看哪！我派我的使者，在我前面预备道路；你们所寻求的主，必忽然进入他的殿；你们所爱慕立约的使者，就要来到。”
