有一天，耶稣正在圣殿里教导人、传讲福音，祭司长、律法教师和长老上前，质问祂：“告诉我们，你凭什么权柄做这些事？谁授权给你了？”耶稣回答说：“我也问你们一个问题。你们告诉我，约翰的洗礼是从天上来的还是从人来的？”他们彼此议论说：“如果我们说‘是从天上来的’，祂一定会问，‘那你们为什么不相信他？’如果我们说‘是从人来的’，百姓会拿石头打死我们，因为他们相信约翰是先知。”于是，他们回答说：“我们不知道约翰的洗礼是从哪里来的。”耶稣说：“我也不告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。”

“果然如此，希律和本丢·彼拉多、外族人和以色列人都聚集在这城里，要对抗你膏立的圣子耶稣，然而他们所做的只不过是你凭自己的能力和旨意所预定的。

第二天，官长、长老和律法教师都聚集在耶路撒冷，大祭司亚那，以及该亚法、约翰、亚历山大和大祭司的许多亲族都在场。他们令使徒站在当中，质问道：“你们凭什么权柄、以谁的名义这样做？”那时彼得被圣灵充满，对他们说：“各位百姓的官长和长老啊，

再过两天就是逾越节和除酵节，祭司长和律法教师正暗暗地找机会拘捕、杀害耶稣。

耶稣说：“我是公开对世人讲的，我常在犹太人聚集的会堂和圣殿教导人，没有在背地里讲过什么。

列国为何咆哮？万民为何枉费心机？世上的君王一同行动，官长聚集商议，要抵挡耶和华和祂所膏立的王。他们说：“让我们挣断他们的锁链，脱去他们的捆索！”坐在天上宝座上的主必笑他们，祂必嘲笑他们。那时，祂必怒斥他们，使他们充满恐惧。

当耶稣走过圣殿的所罗门廊时，

万军之耶和华说：“我要差遣我的使者为我开路。你们所寻求的主必突然来到祂的殿中。你们所期盼的那位立约的使者快要来了！”
