耶稣清早回城的时候，觉得饿了。他看见路旁有一棵无花果树，就走过去；但他在树上什么也找不到，只有叶子，就对树说：“你永远不再结果子了。”那棵树就立刻枯萎。门徒看见了，十分惊奇，说：“这棵无花果树是怎样立刻枯萎的呢？”耶稣回答他们：“我实在告诉你们，如果你们有信心，不怀疑，不但能作我对无花果树所作的，就是对这座山说‘移开，投到海里去’，也必成就。你们祷告，无论求什么，只要相信，都必得着。”

耶稣禁食了四十昼夜，就饿了，

在那里有雅各井。耶稣因为旅途疲倦了，就坐在井旁；那时大约正午。有一个撒玛利亚妇人来打水。耶稣对她说：“请给我水喝。”

当时，门徒对耶稣说：“拉比，请吃。”耶稣说：“我有食物吃，是你们所不知道的。”门徒就彼此说：“难道有人拿东西给他吃了吗？”

四十天受魔鬼的试探。那些日子他什么也没有吃，日子满了他就饿了。

所以，他必须在各方面和他的弟兄们相同，为了要在神的事上，成为仁慈忠信的大祭司，好为人民赎罪。

这事以后，耶稣知道一切都已经成就了，为了要使经上的话应验，就说：“我渴了。”
