This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

No, I am not! But he is coming soon— and I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the sandals on his feet.’

And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.

You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins.

Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness.Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.’

In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was,“ Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”

“ I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am— so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after John began preaching his message of baptism.
