在那些日子，有一次耶稣出去到山上祷告，整夜祷告神。

耶稣知道群众要来强迫他作王，就独自又退到山上去了。

他离开了他们，就上山去祷告。到了晚上，船在海中，耶稣独自在岸上，看见门徒辛辛苦苦地摇橹，因为风不顺。天快亮的时候（“天快亮的时候”原文作“夜里四更天”），耶稣在海面上向他们走去，想要赶过他们。

耶稣照常到橄榄山去，门徒也跟着他。到了那里，他对门徒说：“你们应当祷告，免得陷入试探。”于是耶稣离开他们约有扔一块石头那么远，跪下祷告说：“父啊，如果你愿意，就把这杯拿走！但不要成就我的意思，只要成就你的旨意。”（有些抄本有第43、44节：“有一位天使从天上显现，加给他力量。耶稣非常伤痛，祷告更加恳切，汗如大血点滴在地上。”）

耶稣却退到旷野去祷告。

基督在世的时候，曾经流泪大声祷告恳求那位能救他脱离死亡的神；因着他的敬虔，就蒙了应允。

天一亮，耶稣出来，到旷野地方去。众人寻找他，一直找到他那里，要留住他，不要他离开他们。他却说：“我也必须到别的城去传神国的福音，因为我是为了这缘故奉差遣的。”

你们应当有这样的思想，这也是基督耶稣的思想。（全节或译：“你们当以基督耶稣的心为心。”）

他解散了群众，就独自上山去祷告。到了晚上，他还是独自一人在那里。

耶和华啊！求你在清晨听我的声音；我要一早向你陈明，并且迫切等候。

耶稣说：“我的食物就是遵行差我来者的旨意，并且完成他的工作。

他们以敌对的态度来回报我的爱；至于我，我只有祷告。
