一天，耶穌到山上整夜向上帝禱告。

耶穌離開，像往常一樣前往橄欖山，門徒也跟去了。到了山上，祂對門徒說：「你們要禱告，以免陷入誘惑！」然後，祂獨自走到離門徒約有扔一塊石頭那麼遠的地方跪下禱告：「父啊，若你願意，求你撤去此杯，然而，願你的旨意成就，而非我的意願。」有一位從天上來的天使向祂顯現，給祂加添力量。祂心中極其悲痛，禱告更懇切，汗珠如血滴在地上。祂禱告完後，便起身回到門徒那裡，看見他們因憂愁而疲憊地睡著了，就說：「你們為什麼睡覺呢？要起來禱告，以免陷入誘惑！」

不過，祂還是常常退到曠野去禱告。

基督在世為人的時候，曾經聲淚俱下地祈求能救祂脫離死亡的上帝。祂因為敬虔而蒙了應允。

黎明時，耶穌退到一處僻靜的地方。眾人四處找祂，找到後想留住祂，不讓祂離開。但耶穌對他們說：「我必須把上帝國的福音傳到其他的城鎮去，因為我是為此而被差來的。」

你們應當有基督耶穌那樣的心腸。

待眾人都離開了，祂就獨自上山去禱告，在那裡一直待到晚上。

耶和華啊！早晨你聽我的禱告。早晨我到你面前祈求，切切等候。

耶穌說：「我的食物就是遵行差我來者的旨意，完成祂的工作。

我愛他們，他們卻控告我，但我為他們禱告。
