聽的人都大吃一驚，說：「他不就是那在耶路撒冷迫害信徒的人嗎？他到這裡來不是要把大馬士革的信徒押去見祭司長嗎？」但掃羅越發有能力，引經據典證明耶穌是基督，使大馬士革的猶太人驚慌失措。

「瞎眼的嚮導啊，你們有禍了！你們說，『指著聖殿發誓，不算數；但是指著聖殿裡的金子發誓，就要遵守誓言。』無知的瞎子啊！金子重要呢？還是使金子神聖的聖殿重要呢？你們又說，『指著祭壇發誓不算數，但是指著壇上的供物發誓，就要遵守誓言。』瞎眼的人啊！供物重要呢？還是使供物神聖的祭壇重要呢？其實指著祭壇發誓，就是指著祭壇和壇上的一切東西發誓。指著聖殿發誓，就是指著聖殿和住在裡面的上帝發誓。指著天發誓，就是指著上帝的寶座和寶座上的那位發誓。「虛偽的律法教師和法利賽人啊，你們有禍了！你們把薄荷、茴香、芹菜獻上十分之一，卻忽略了律法中更重要的事——公正、憐憫、信實。後者是你們本該做的，前者也不可忽略。瞎眼的嚮導啊！你們濾出蚊蟲，卻吞下駱駝。

上帝的話有生命、有功效，鋒利無比，勝過一切兩刃的利劍，甚至能夠剌入並分開魂與靈、關節與骨髓，辨明人一切的思想和動機。受造物在上帝面前都無法隱藏，因為萬物都是赤裸裸地暴露在上帝眼前，我們必須向祂交帳。

他們無法駁倒司提凡，因為他靠著智慧和聖靈說話。

因為法利賽人和所有的猶太人都拘守古人的傳統，總是先照禮儀洗手之後才吃飯；從市場回來也要先潔淨自己，然後才吃飯。他們還拘守許多其他規矩，如洗杯、罐、銅器等。他們質問耶穌：「為什麼你的門徒違背祖先的傳統，竟用不潔淨的手吃飯呢？」耶穌回答說：「以賽亞先知針對你們這些偽君子所說的預言一點不錯，正如聖經上說，『這些人嘴上尊崇我，心卻遠離我。他們的教導無非是人的規條，他們敬拜我也是枉然。』你們只知拘守人的傳統，卻無視上帝的誡命。」耶穌又對他們說：「你們為了拘守自己的傳統，竟巧妙地廢除了上帝的誡命。摩西說，『要孝敬父母』，又說，『咒罵父母的，必被處死。』你們卻認為人若對父母說，『我把供養你們的錢財已經全部奉獻給上帝了』，他就可以不奉養父母。你們就是這樣為了拘守傳統而廢除上帝的道，類似的情形還有很多。」
