耶穌在加利利海邊行走的時候，看見兄弟二人，就是名叫彼得的西門和他的弟弟安得烈，正在把網撒到海裡去；他們是漁夫。耶穌就對他們說：“來跟從我，我要使你們作得人的漁夫。”他們立刻撇下網，跟從了他。耶穌又往前走，看見另一對兄弟，就是西庇太的兒子雅各和他的兄弟約翰，正和父親西庇太在船上整理魚網，他就呼召他們。他們立刻離了船，別了父親，跟從了耶穌。

聽了約翰的話而跟從耶穌的那兩個人，一個是西門．彼得的弟弟安得烈。他先找到自己的哥哥西門，告訴他：“我們遇見彌賽亞了！”（“彌賽亞”的意思就是“基督”。）安得烈就帶他到耶穌那裡。耶穌定睛看著他，說：“你是約翰的兒子西門，你要稱為磯法。”（“磯法”翻譯出來就是“彼得”。）

有一個門徒，就是西門．彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說：

就是西門（又給他起名叫彼得），和他弟弟安得烈，以及雅各、約翰、腓力、巴多羅邁、

耶穌站在革尼撒勒湖邊，眾人擁擠他，要聽神的道。他看見兩隻船停在湖邊，漁夫離開船洗網去了。他上了西門的那一隻船，請他撐開，離岸不遠，就坐下，從船上教導眾人。講完了，就對西門說：“把船開到水深的地方，下網打魚！”西門說：“主啊，我們整夜勞苦，毫無所得，不過，我願照你的話下網。”他們下了網，就圈住很多魚，網幾乎裂開，就招呼另外那隻船上的同伴來幫助，他們就來把兩隻船裝滿，甚至船要下沉。西門．彼得看見這種情景，就俯伏在耶穌膝前，說：“主啊，離開我，因為我是個罪人。”他和跟他在一起的人，因這網所打的魚，都十分驚駭。西門的夥伴，西庇太的兒子雅各、約翰也是這樣。耶穌對西門說：“不要怕！從今以後，你要作得人的漁夫了。”他們把兩隻船攏了岸，撇下一切，跟從了耶穌。

安得烈、腓力、巴多羅邁、馬太、多馬、亞勒腓的兒子雅各、達太、激進派的西門，

他們進了城，上了一間樓房，就是彼得、約翰、雅各、安得烈、腓力、多馬、巴多羅邁、馬太、亞勒腓的兒子雅各、激進派的西門、雅各的兒子猶大等人所住的。

他選立的十二個人是：西門（耶穌給他起名叫彼得），

腓力去告訴安得烈，安得烈就和腓力去告訴耶穌。
