耶稣在加利利海边行走的时候，看见兄弟二人，就是名叫彼得的西门和他的弟弟安得烈，正在把网撒到海里去；他们是渔夫。耶稣就对他们说：“来跟从我，我要使你们作得人的渔夫。”他们立刻撇下网，跟从了他。耶稣又往前走，看见另一对兄弟，就是西庇太的儿子雅各和他的兄弟约翰，正和父亲西庇太在船上整理鱼网，他就呼召他们。他们立刻离了船，别了父亲，跟从了耶稣。

听了约翰的话而跟从耶稣的那两个人，一个是西门．彼得的弟弟安得烈。他先找到自己的哥哥西门，告诉他：“我们遇见弥赛亚了！”（“弥赛亚”的意思就是“基督”。）安得烈就带他到耶稣那里。耶稣定睛看着他，说：“你是约翰的儿子西门，你要称为矶法。”（“矶法”翻译出来就是“彼得”。）

有一个门徒，就是西门．彼得的弟弟安得烈，对耶稣说：

就是西门（又给他起名叫彼得），和他弟弟安得烈，以及雅各、约翰、腓力、巴多罗迈、

耶稣站在革尼撒勒湖边，众人拥挤他，要听神的道。他看见两只船停在湖边，渔夫离开船洗网去了。他上了西门的那一只船，请他撑开，离岸不远，就坐下，从船上教导众人。讲完了，就对西门说：“把船开到水深的地方，下网打鱼！”西门说：“主啊，我们整夜劳苦，毫无所得，不过，我愿照你的话下网。”他们下了网，就圈住很多鱼，网几乎裂开，就招呼另外那只船上的同伴来帮助，他们就来把两只船装满，甚至船要下沉。西门．彼得看见这种情景，就俯伏在耶稣膝前，说：“主啊，离开我，因为我是个罪人。”他和跟他在一起的人，因这网所打的鱼，都十分惊骇。西门的伙伴，西庇太的儿子雅各、约翰也是这样。耶稣对西门说：“不要怕！从今以后，你要作得人的渔夫了。”他们把两只船拢了岸，撇下一切，跟从了耶稣。

安得烈、腓力、巴多罗迈、马太、多马、亚勒腓的儿子雅各、达太、激进派的西门，

他们进了城，上了一间楼房，就是彼得、约翰、雅各、安得烈、腓力、多马、巴多罗迈、马太、亚勒腓的儿子雅各、激进派的西门、雅各的儿子犹大等人所住的。

他选立的十二个人是：西门（耶稣给他起名叫彼得），
